SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTS

See partial Project list at bottom of page

SEG has been actively involved for many years in the design of Hi Tech Special Environments for a wide variety of clients.

The principals of SEG have designed, and in many cases were responsible for the construction of, a wide array of special environments including building topologies such as:

Pharmaceuticals Silicon chips Medical devices
Heavy industry Aircraft maintenance Environmental laboratories
R&D facilities Dairy and food processing Animal vaccines
Various components of health care facilities

The concept of high technology emerged from the systems created during the Second World War. Phase I environments involved computer systems which were manufactured in special environments that controlled particulate, vibration and electromagnetic pollution. Phase II began in the mid 1980's with the creation of biosafety and biohazard environments, some of which also included the Phase I controls.

As we designed and constructed many of these environments, we discovered that it was as important to create operational protocols and "special environment cultures" as it was to create the physical space. We realized that in some instances certain environments and/or processes were not suitable for humans and robotics were introduced.

Design of special environments requires familiarity with, and use of, one or more of the following regulated formats:

    Clean room class CMPSs-Device
    Bio hazard class CGMPRS
    Bio safety Levels IA GLPSs
Bio safety Levels IV OSHA 2201 (R)
Bio safety Levels IA and IV OHMt
    BSC class OMCS
    FDA Phase approval HAZMAT
    USDA Phase approval

It is often difficult for organizations to envision and articulate the most effective, efficient and inexpensive environments and process systems for the design, production and quality control of their products. Actually, a long history of using the same configurations and control procedures can skew the choice of the optimal design and operations systems because existing systems have been considered acceptable (i.e. maintaining employees in high risk environments rather than considering robotics or possibly by designing a sub-cultural identity for the employees to better manage the product within the rigorous environmental cell conditions.)

The professional staff at SEG is skilled at assisting organizations to create new, or renovate existing, special environments at any scale or level of criticality.

Designing unique residential and work environments for the needs of the physically challenged and elderly has been a very rewarding dimension of our professional services. These projects include medical facilities, long term care facilities (nursing, assisted living, special care - Dementia) and public sector facilities for employment of people with all types of disabilities. (Contact SEG Health Care for more information about these services.)
